Tūī Talks | Daily Oral Language Slides (Years 0–3)

Tūī Talk Time is a daily speaking and listening routine for Years 0 to 3. Put a slide up and your class is straight into a quick talking challenge. Five minutes, and a calm, happy way to start the day. Young children learn so much through talk, and it is one of the first things to slip when the day is busy. Being able to share an idea, listen to others and have a go in front of the class builds the confidence and language that early reading and writing stand on. Kea Kōrero is a daily speaking and listening routine for Years 4 to 6. Put a slide up and your class is straight into a quick talking challenge. Take as little as five minutes, or stretch it to fifteen. So much of how kids connect now happens through a screen, so being able to share an idea, back it with a reason and really listen to others matters more than ever. These activities build exactly those skills, and they are good fun, sparking creativity and confidence along the way. Every slide includes a worked example and an extension, and the slides are fully editable, so you can adjust the support to suit your class. Read the Room with Ruru | Social Skills and Discussion | Years 7-8 | Daily SEL Activities

Some of the most important skills we teach are the social ones. Reading a room, keeping your cool, owning a mistake, knowing when to speak up and when to let it go. Ideally these are learned at home, but the reality is that plenty of students reach Years 7 and 8 still finding them hard. This gives you a simple daily way to teach them well.
