Two Sides, One Story | Read Like a Detective (Years 3–4)
Two people. One story. But they do not agree. So who do you believe?
Learning to notice when a story is told one-sided is a big skill for young readers, and a brilliant first step into critical reading. Long before they can say the word bias, children can learn to spot sneaky words, notice what has been left out, and weigh up the clues. It is a skill that helps them for life, in adverts, online, and in every one-sided story they will ever hear. It is also the kind of thinking that is easy to leave to chance, so having it planned and ready to teach is a real win.
Here is how it works. Children read two short accounts of the same event, each told by someone who wants them on their side. Their job is to be a detective: read both sides, look for the clues, and work out what really happened for themselves. The five stories get cleverer as they go, from an obvious fibber to two fair kids who simply see things differently, which teaches the lesson that sticks: telling a story your own way is not always lying. Best of all, it feels like a mystery to solve, so children lean right in.
