Two Sides, One Story | Read Like a Detective (Years 5–6)

Two people. One event. Two completely different stories. So who do you believe?

Critical reading is one of the hardest comprehension skills to teach, and one of the most important. In a world of adverts, clickbait and one-sided posts, children need to learn to weigh evidence rather than trust the loudest voice. That is exactly what this resource builds, and it is a skill that protects them long after they leave your classroom. It is also the kind of deep thinking that is easy to leave to chance, so having it planned and ready to teach is a real win.

Here is how it works. Students read two accounts of the same event, each written by someone who wants them on their side. Their job is to spot the loaded words, notice what has been left out, and work out the truth for themselves. The five stories get cleverer as they go, from an obvious fibber to two fair people with no clear answer, which teaches the lesson that really sticks: bias is not always lying. Best of all, it feels like detective work rather than a worksheet, so students lean in without realising how hard they are thinking.
