Two Sides, One Story | Read Like a Detective (Years 7–8)
Two Sides, One Story is a critical reading resource that turns your Year 7 and 8 readers into detectives. Students read two biased accounts of the same event — a group chat that went too far, a team selection that felt unfair, some missing fundraiser money — and work out the truth for themselves by weighing the evidence rather than trusting the loudest voice.
The purpose is simple but powerful: to build the critical reading and media literacy skills students need to navigate a world of news feeds, adverts, and one-sided stories. Every pair of accounts is deliberately slanted, so students learn to spot loaded language, notice what has been left out, tell opinion from fact, and ask who benefits.
What's included
- Five paired stories with mature, relatable contexts
- Six questions per story, plus a write-your-own extension
- A self-marking answer key in student-friendly language
- A teacher guide with the exact curriculum links
- Print worksheets and a colour digital version, both fully editable in Canva
The stories grow more balanced as they go, moving from an obvious exaggerator to two fair, honest voices with no tidy answer. That is the real lesson: the same facts can be framed into two very different truths, and a careful reader learns to notice how.
