Read the Room with Ruru | Social Skills and Discussion | Years 7-8 | Daily SEL Activities
Some of the most important skills we teach are the social ones. Reading a room, keeping your cool, owning a mistake, knowing when to speak up and when to let it go. Ideally these are learned at home, but the reality is that plenty of students reach Years 7 and 8 still finding them hard. This gives you a simple daily way to teach them well. Each day, Ruru the morepork puts a real situation on the board. Students think about how they, or someone else, could handle it. There is no single right answer, just honest thinking and good discussion. Five minutes, no prep. It builds empathy, respect, self-awareness and the confidence to handle tricky moments well. These are the skills that carry students a long way, and they deserve a deliberate place in our teaching. Made with aroha in Aotearoa.
